IMCG Field Symposium – Australia December 2013
Organisers: Jennie Whinam, Ruth Lawrence, Geoff Hope, Kerry Bridle & Roger Good
The field symposium will be held Sunday 1 December-12 December 2013. A maximum of 30 participants (due to accommodation limits), with half the places reserved for people from the southern hemisphere (to maximise southern hemisphere collaborations) are possible. Cost of 1100 euros (not including the Canberra-Launceston internal flight)
Our initial draft program looks like this:
- Sunday 1 December – Arrive in Moss Vale (train from Sydney); welcome dinner
- Monday 2 Dec – Wingecarribee swamp (spectacular peatland collapse), overnight in Moss Vale
- Tuesday 3 Dec – Bega Swamp drive to Kosciuszko NP (staying at Charlotte’s Pass)
- Wednesday 4 Dec – Rehabilitation of burnt sites; Forum on grazing in the high country (Charlottes Pass)
- Thursday 5 Dec – Montane peatlands en route to Canberra
- Friday 6/12 – Peatland symposium – Australian National University (Canberra)
- Saturday 7/12 – fly to Launceston and then travel to Cradle Mountain
- Sunday 8/12 – Sphagnum & buttongrass moorlands (Cradle Mountain)
- Monday 8/12 – Day trip up to the cushion bogs (Cradle Mountain) (spotlighting on one of these nights at Cradle Mountain)
- Tuesday 9/12 –Vale of Belvoir and Pine Lake (travel to Hobart)
- Wednesday 10/12 – Mount Field cushion (and Sphagnum) bogs (Hobart)
- Thursday 11/12 – South-west ombrotrophic buttongrass moorlands (Hobart)
- Friday 12/12 – Hartz Mtns with concluding dinner on return at our Sandfly farm (Hobart)
- Saturday 13/12 – depart – note that the biggest market in Tasmania is on Saturday morning at Salamanca.
Note also that it will not be possible to go to Hartz Mtns and return in time for a flight out of Hobart.
