Site description

About 12 km to the west of the town of Bariloche in the Province of Rio Negro, Argentina in the South-eastern margin of the Nahuel Huapi Lake between 71 degrees 08 and 17,36 and 41 04 and 41 13 lies the bog known as Mallin Bariloche. It is contemporary with the glacial lake Nahuel Huapi. The town of Bariloche is within the Nahuel Huapi National Park.
A community of Nothofagus antartica and Escallonia virgata are the two main groups of plants. There are 74 bird species that use this area for nesting, resting, passing through or that live there permanently.

Ecological value

This is one of the many bogs that could be lost to urbanization in the town of Bariloche. Not only does this bog share the functions and attributes of other bogs but it has some special characteristics which make it important for the local wild life and economy. It is a wild bird habitat, it has native trees and other vegetation, two natural springs. It used to have the native fish Galaxias maculatus but the stream that connected the bog with the lake was obstructed (this could possibly be reversed).

Loss of important site for research and environmental education.
