Welcome to „Catalogue of peatland substrates“!

Mires are fascinating ecosystems realising numerous important functions within landscapes. The condition of peatlands in Central Europe is still alarming, leading to increased restoration activities during the past years.

An important precondition for successful restoration is the knowledge of the belowground composition – the stratigraphy – of a certain peatland. Peatlands mainly consist of partly characteristic sequences of different types of peat and gyttja. Recently, the correct determination of these different substrates is mainly reserved to experts.

Therefore, the „Profiles of mire substrates“ aim at the profound description and photographical illustration of various substrates to facilitate and enhance the determination, also for non-experts.

The „Catalogue of peatland substratesldquo; consists of two parts: The major component are the 24 actual profiles of the most common peatland substrates as well as a correspondent determination key for application in the field. The introduction part provides supporting information on the topics mires and peatlands, mire types, mire substrates and soil classification. Furthermore, helpful hints are given for realization of field work and derivation of the mire type with the help of the determined stratigraphy.

An English version with the area of application of Central Europe will be available in 2012. Nevertheless, up to 2012, the already completed German version might also be interesting for non-German-speakers due to the numerous detailed photos of the mire substrates. On the homepage www.mire-substrates.com all profiles and the introduction part are available as free download.
