Drained and damaged peatlands emit 2 Gigatonnes of CO2 each year, almost 6% of Global greenhouse gas emissions.

The United Nations and others are calling for the conservation and restoration of peatlands, as a cost effective option for helping tackle climate change.

FAO and Wetlands International launch the global 'Organic Soils and Peatlands Climate Change Mitigation Initiative' and publish a "Peatlands – guidance for climate change mitigation by conservation, rehabilitation and sustainable use".

From 26. -28. June 2012 ecologists from across the UK, Europe and from as far away as Tibet descended upon Bangor University to consider the major challenges and opportunities facing the restoration and conservation of the globe’s peatlands. The meeting was organised jointly by the British Ecological Society and the IUCN UK National Committee Peatland Programme and, alongside fascinating discussion, featured a beer specially brewed for the conference – incorporating, perhaps unsurprisingly, Welsh Bog Myrtle, which can be found on peatlands across the UK.

The Field Symposium and associated Congress and IMCG General will take place in two countries, Ecuador and Colombia from September 21, 2012 (arrival in Quito, Ecuador) to October 3, 2012 (departure from Bogota, Colombia).

The Durban Climate Summit has delivered an overall rather meager agreement. A positive outcome has though come forward to reduce emissions from peatlands, both in REDD+ from developing as under the Kyoto Protocol for developed countries. Wetlands International celebrates this result. Peatlands represent 6% of global emissions and until now, no incentive existed under the UNFCCC for reduce these.
