The IMCG Global Peatland Database presents an overview of the
extent and condition of peatlands and mires for all countries of the
world. The IMCG Global Peatland Database is maintained by Hans Joosten
(Greifswald University, Germany) and should be cited as:

Provides information on the importance of peatlands worldwide,

The data are mainly presented for national states. Next to national states, other distinct and disjunct areas (e.g. Greenland, Spitsbergen/Svalbard, Tasmania) or contested regions (e.g. Falklands/Malvinas, Jammu and Kashmir) are presented separately. The subdivision in "continents" is pragmatically based on the availability of data (e.g. Irian Jaya is scheduled under Indonesia in "Asia", whereas Papua New Guinea is allotted to "Australasia"). For every country/area information is given on its location and extent and on its major physiogeographic characteristics, as far as relevant for peatland distribution.
